Attractions in Marmande
One of Marmande’s highlights is Notre-Dame. Much of the church dates from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries, although the altarpiece is from the eighteenth century. The church garden is a fine example of classical French style with shaped parterres and seasonal flowers. Other interesting features include the Renaissance-style cloister from the sixteenth century. Once the homes of merchants and traders, Rue Labat is lined with beautiful half-timber houses from the fifteenth century. Other attractions include the Chapel of Saint Benedict. The chapel’s ceiling was painted in the Baroque style by Jean Michel in the seventeenth century.
Places to Visit Outside Marmande
Hiring a car for your trip to Marmande lets you see some of picturesque towns in the surrounding area. La Reole is just under a half hour’s drive to the north-west along the D813 and D1113 from Marmande. The historic town is home to France’s oldest town hall, which was used between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. Other sights include the twelfth church of St. Peter and the eighteenth century Benedictine monastery. Allemans-du-Dropt is also less than a half hour away, but to the north-east via the D132 and D39 roads. Founded by Germanic Alemanni people, the town has a tenth century Romanesque-style church with frescoes from the late fifteenth century and is a popular spot for canoeing in the summer.
Hiring a car from Enterprise also allows you to explore destinations further afield. The town sits within the vast Aquitaine region of south-west France. The region’s largest city is Bordeaux, a location renowned for its wines. The city is just over an hour’s drive to the north-west via the A62. Bayonne is about two hours to the south-west. Part of the French Basque Country, the city has an interesting old town and city walls to explore. A gateway to the majestic Pyrenees, Pau is also about two hours to the south. A car gives you the flexibility to explore all that Aquitaine has to offer, from coastal drives overlooking the Atlantic Ocean to mountain drives through the Pyrenees.
